On the 20th of September, in the Centre of Warsaw, about 20 refugees were returning to their accommodation in the evening. The refugees were violently set upon by a group of supporters from the Legia Warsaw football club. The refugees were attacked and language was used which was anti-Arab and anti-Muslim in nature with the Syrian Muslim refugees sustaining serious injuries in the assaults.
Legia supporters used sticks, batons and knives in the attack on the homeward bound Syrians and the attack lasted about 10 minutes and was captured on mobile phones. Ambulances and police arrived after the assaults had taken with 5 of the refugees being classified as being in a serious condition.
This is not the first time that Legia fans have been in the limelight for all of the wrong reasons. The club was reprimanded by UEFA in 2014 for the racism of its fans.
